A Look At Omaha Poker
Posted by admin under Casino
Similar to Texas Hold Em poker in terms of game play and the fact it is considered a community card game, Omaha poker is a popular version of poker, still played regularly and catered for in many online and offline casinos.
Originally called Nugget Hold Em due to the games first mainstream use in the Golden Nuggets casino, Las Vegas, Omaha pokers origins cannot be dated back to any specific period in time. The Nugget Hold Em game is a direct ancestor of Omaha poker and this time in the middle 1950s is considered the time when Omahas birth is dated to.
In its most popular country, North America, the phrase Omaha poker can be in reference to several different variations of Omaha poker. However, in most other countries, Omaha poker refers to what is known as Omaha High in North America. This variation, Omaha High, is a game that generally has a pot limit and is abbreviated in many places around the world as PLO Pot Limit Omaha for short.
One of the reasons why the other popular variation, Omaha High Low poker, has not been or become as popular as Texas Hold Em poker is due to the sheer complexity of the game. The way Omaha High Low poker is played is similar to Texas Hold Em. Each players aim is to create two hands, a five card high hand and a five card low hand, consisting of an ace to five, although a card up to an eight will be accepted as a qualifying hand. After all betting has taken place, the pot is split between both winning hands. Whilst this may seem relatively straightforward, the complexity begins when the rules states that all players in the game must use a mixture of two of their hole cards, for which each player is dealt four of, to make their high hand and two of their hole cards to complete their low hand. In addition to this, if no player has a qualifying low hand, then the high hand takes the whole pot amount.
For beginners to the game of Omaha High, or beginners tables at a casino, both online and offline, many Omaha High tables offer a qualifying card of 9 and the occasional table allows five hole cards, rather than the standard four.
There are many geographical variations of Omaha poker. One of the more popular variations is played in Europe and is known locally as Courcheeval. The main variation of the game occurs when players bet after a single community card has been dealt, rather than in standard Omaha poker when players bet on the four initial cards, then the three community cards after they have been laid.
Omaha poker is a great community card game that whilst not as popular as the more mainstream Texas Hold Em poker, is still massively popular. With many variations around the world and in many different casinos, Omaha poker is the perfect game for beginners, amateurs, experienced players and professional card players alike, with a variation of the Omaha poker game suitable for everyones card playing needs.
